Ghana’s Patrick “Darling Boy Arrow” Allotey clinched the WBO Africa Super Welterweight Strap via a round seven stoppage of game Tanzanian contender Hamisi Maya in the early hours of Sunday March 27 in Dansoman, Accra, Ghana.
It was an early scare for Allotey, who now improves to 42- 4 – 32KOs, as the rather lanky, awkward and technically savvy Maya gave Allotey a lot of trouble in the opening rounds.
Maya kept popping the jab and swinging in with hooks and upper cuts when he spotted an opening. It was obvious from the onset that Allotey was befuddled by the crafty Maya who intermittently switched from his usual Southpaw stance to orthodox unsettling the former world title challenger.
But with his years of experience the Ghanaian pugilist weathered the storm and rose up to the challenge;he expertly bade his time and struck when it was apt. He landed a huge right cross to Maya’s jaw, dazing him instantly and followed it up with a flurry of punches, prompting vastly exposed referee Roger Barnor to step in and stop the fight as the young brave Hamisi was out on his feet.
Maya now 13-4- 11KOs, last lost to Ivan Koslovzky in Russia. There were vehement protests from the Maya camp on the stoppage but ultimately the referee has the onerous responsibility of protecting the fighters.
Indeed the bill, put together by Cabic Boxing Promotions did not fail to live up to expectations as the event was laced with chills, thrills and frills; a serene and exquisite ambience, great entertainment and culinary package and bouts that saw patrons sitting on tenterhooks.
The Idrowhyt Events Center was the venue and other bouts on the night had Emmanuel Quaye handed veteran Frank Dodzi a round 2 KO, retaining his National Title and annexing the WABU Super Welterweight version.
Robert Nunoo gave Joseph “Akalish”Akai Nettey of the Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation a good run for his money before eventually succumbing in the Third round much to the surprise of spectators.
Nettey displayed glimpses of finesse and should be propped up for bigger things having successfully defended his RBO World Light Flyweight Title and thus improving to 5-0 with an perfect KO record. It was certain from this performance that the young lad has to put in a lot of work if he hopes to really shine on the big stage.
“The serenading Warrior” Osumanu Saabo Haruna dispatched Nigerian John Martin Cyril by KO in round two of their scheduled twelve, adding the WABU Super Heavyweight trinket to his National strap.
In a Super Lightweight grudge match up, the boxer known as “Pancho Power”, Faisal Abubakar scored a stoppage win over a determined Emmanuel Allotey in fourth round.
The 29 year old Faisal now has a record of 8-0 with a perfect KO streak.
Michael Darku of the Palm Spring Boxing Gymnasium at Mamprobi , Accra under the tutelage of coach Moses Dormenyo and Coach Ben Tetteh displayed raw power; knocking his opponent Moses Lartey out of the ring in their Middleweight contest.
Another Palm Spring Boxing Gymnasium product, Emmanuel Mankatah Sackey known as the “Silent Warrior” did light work of heavily tattooed debutant David Lamptey via a KO win in a Super Featherweight Clash.
Early on, Loren Japhet of Fit Square Gym engaged Mohammed Fuseini of the Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation in an exciting exhibition bout.
The which was telecast live on various stations like TV AFRICA, ITV and JOY PRIME and also on various streaming platforms and then DSTV attracted a healthy crowd attendance and a host of dignitaries including The Member of Parliament for Ododododio constituency Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, GBA Prez Mr Kotei Neequaye, WBO Africa Rep. Mr Samir Captan and many others.
The Cabic Team: CEO Ivan Bruce Cudjoe, Director Ellis Quaye and Media Director Jingles Oyiadzo deserve commendation for an impressive show, not forgetting Media Liaison Sammy Heywood Okine. Ring announcer for the night Nathaniel “Citizen” Attoh was classy as usual. Ringside Commentators Theo Edzie Wilson, Mustapha Nettey and yours truly, Samuel Opoku Amoah (SAM NANA GOLD) held it down with dexterity and poise.
On the whole, this edition of CABIC BIGFIGHT NIGHT was hugely remarkable.
