Accra Metropolitan University Proposes Transformational “Meridian Rock Project”

Accra Metropolitan University (Accra Met) has taken a bold step toward reimagining Ghana’s role on the global stage with the official proposal of a landmark initiative known as The Meridian Rock Project. In a high-level meeting held today with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the university laid out a visionary plan aimed at developing the area around the sacred Meridian Rock, a site symbolically recognized as the “Center of the World.”

The meeting, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Goski Alabi, focused on how the project would not only showcase Ghana’s unique global position but also serve as a platform for cultural preservation and economic growth. “This transformational project will present an opportunity to showcase Ghana’s unique position in the world while preserving cultural heritage and creating economic opportunities,” Prof. Alabi stated.

At the core of the proposal is the creation of a monumental public space to highlight Ghana’s geographic significance. Plans include a Monumental Plaza featuring a replica of the Meridian Rock, and an immersive observatory experience known as “The Walk on the Line”, a high-tech installation aligned with the Greenwich Meridian and enhanced with 5G connectivity and Virtual Reality.

Other major elements of the project include a Cruise Terminal to attract international maritime tourism, Cultural and Culinary Hubs to celebrate Ghanaian cuisine and traditions, and AI-powered Educational Kiosks designed to serve both tourists and school groups. A proposed Center of the World Festival aims to become an annual celebration of Ghanaian culture, while a “Center of the World” passport stamp will provide visitors with a unique and memorable souvenir of their visit.

Accra Met envisions this project as a powerful collaboration between academia, government, and global partners. Alongside GPHA, the university is seeking to engage with organizations such as UNESCO, the Ghana Tourism Authority, and various local and international agencies to bring the initiative to life.
