Man Chooses Chickens Over Luxury Cars After 34 Years of Service

A Kenyan gardener, Hesbon Imbwaka, has stunned many after turning down the chance to own luxury cars and instead choosing chickens as his retirement gift.
Imbwaka, who worked at the German Embassy in Nairobi for 34 years, was offered a choice between a brand-new Mercedes and BMW by German Ambassador Sebastian Groth. But instead of driving away in style, he humbly asked for 1,000 chickens to start a poultry farm in his rural home.
Explaining his decision, Imbwaka said he preferred something that could “grow, multiply, and sustain his family,” rather than a flashy asset that might drain his pockets.
Ambassador Groth praised the choice, calling Imbwaka “a man of vision” whose priorities set a remarkable example. “Hesbon could have gone for luxury, but he chose a legacy,” the Ambassador noted.
The unusual move has since gone viral, sparking admiration across Kenya and beyond. Many on social media applauded Imbwaka for his wisdom, branding him “a true African investor” and a reminder that real wealth lies in sustainability, not status.
Imbwaka, who joined the embassy in 1989, said he hopes his poultry venture will not only support his family but also create opportunities for his community. “I’m grateful for the love and respect I’ve received. This is my way of giving back and building something lasting,” he added.
