ACCRA METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY AMONG 19 ACCREDITED UNIVERSITIES TO OFFER LLB DEGREE AND PROFESSIONAL LAW PROGRAMS

In a significant development for legal education in Ghana, the General Legal Council (GLC), the Ghana School of Law, and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) have officially accredited nineteen universities to offer both the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme and Professional Legal Education including Accra Metropolitan University.
The decision marks a major milestone in the evolution of legal training in Ghana and reflects ongoing efforts to broaden access to legal education, strengthen professional training, and increase the country’s capacity to produce competent legal practitioners.
For decades, legal education in Ghana has faced challenges relating to limited opportunities for students seeking admission into professional law programmes. The accreditation of additional institutions is expected to ease pressure on the legal education system while maintaining standards of excellence and professional competence.
The accredited institutions are:
1. Accra Metropolitan University – School of Law
2. Ashesi University – Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
3. Central University – Faculty of Law
4. Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) – Faculty of Law

The accreditation of these institutions demonstrates the confidence of regulatory authorities in the quality of legal education being delivered across the country. It also represents a strategic effort to decentralize professional legal training and make legal education more accessible to qualified students from diverse regions and backgrounds.
Stakeholders within the legal and academic communities have welcomed the move, noting that it will contribute to the development of a larger pool of legal professionals equipped to serve Ghana’s growing governance, business, public service, and justice sectors.
The expansion comes at a time when the demand for legal expertise continues to increase in areas such as commercial law, technology law, human rights, environmental governance, dispute resolution, and public administration. By empowering more institutions to offer both academic and professional legal training, Ghana is positioning itself to meet future legal and developmental needs.
Education experts have emphasized that while access is important, maintaining rigorous academic standards and ethical professional training remains essential. The continued collaboration among the General Legal Council, Ghana School of Law, GTEC, and accredited institutions will therefore be critical to ensuring that graduates possess the knowledge, skills, and integrity required of members of the legal profession.
This landmark accreditation initiative signals a new chapter for legal education in Ghana—one characterized by greater access, expanded opportunities, and a strengthened commitment to excellence in the training of future lawyers.
As these nineteen institutions continue to develop and expand their law programmes, thousands of aspiring lawyers across the country now have enhanced opportunities to pursue their legal ambitions and contribute meaningfully to the administration of justice and national development.
